Style Guide · Reading Glasses

Do your reading glasses have to match your regular glasses?

The short answer is no. The longer answer is more interesting — and more useful for building a collection that actually feels intentional.

Two pairs of glasses alongside each other

The case for contrast

The question assumes that matching is the goal — that visual coherence means sameness. It does not. What you are actually seeking is harmony, which is a different and more sophisticated thing. Two frames can be entirely different in shape and material and still feel intentional together. Two frames can be identical and look like an accident.

If your prescription glasses are a strong frame — a bold acetate, a distinctive shape — your reading glasses can afford to be quieter. A thin metal oval at the desk reads as considered rather than careless when your everyday glasses do the heavy lifting. The contrast itself communicates that you thought about it.

The case for consistency

If your prescription glasses are minimal — a thin titanium frame, a near-invisible shape — your readers have more room to introduce character. A warmer tortoiseshell, a slightly bolder profile. The minimal everyday frame becomes a neutral against which the reader can register.

This approach works especially well when the reader is the pair you wear in professional or social settings — when it matters that you look like you chose it deliberately.

What actually creates coherence is not matching frames but matching intention. A wardrobe of glasses that feels unified has usually been chosen according to a consistent logic — a consistent palette, a consistent relationship to the face, a consistent level of formality. The specific shapes vary. The underlying sensibility does not.

The women whose glasses always look right are not the ones who bought matching sets. They are the ones who chose each pair with the same quality of attention. That attention is exactly what Lorgner is built to support.
